New 700-berth marina to open on Spanish coast

A new Motril marina is set to open on the Costa Tropical in southern Spain, with construction set to begin in March 2026. The marina will replace Club Náutico de Motril and the existing marina on the shore.

According to the project, Marina Motril will have a capacity of 700 boats, with around 450 berths on the water and 250 on-shore berths. The project was designed by Marina Motril SL, a joint venture between the current marina operator and energy group Grupo Cuerva. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and be completed in 2028.

The lead architect for the project is Chapman Taylor. Their solution combines port infrastructure with public spaces, and connects the city centre with the promenade and, more broadly, the Mediterranean Sea. The marina’s exterior is said to be inspired by a combination of Mediterranean architecture and Islamic masterpieces such as the Alhambra palace complex.

The 15,000 square meter waterfront will house shops, restaurants, craft shops and a market. The new yacht club will have two swimming pools, a gym, co-working space and event areas, as well as underground parking for 600 cars.

The creators also plan to build Aula del Mar, a marine research center created in collaboration with the University of Granada, a berth for small sailing yachts and water sports.

An area of about 21,000 square meters will be allocated for ship repair and maintenance, with two lifts for 110 and 450 tons, which will allow Marina Motril to claim the title of the largest ship repair area in the southern Mediterranean.

Marina Motril will be powered by renewable energy as part of Grupo Cuerva’s Green Motril initiative and will also create more than 150 jobs. It is reported that there are currently 427 berths available on the Granada coast: 227 at Marina del Este and 200 at Club Náutico de Motril. The new marina will more than double the capacity, marking the first major expansion since 1988 and will undoubtedly support tourism, retail and boat services.
